ACP Roadshow Arrives at Hampton Gardens, Peterborough

The Schools’ Aerospace Careers Programme continued its 2026 Roadshow with a full-day visit to Hampton Gardens School in Peterborough. The event brought together approximately 90 students from both Hampton Gardens and Hampton College, spanning Years 8 to 11.

The programme was delivered by Chris Marshall, Mike Stokes and Ogi Damjanovic, with Trustee Dr Michael Smith also in attendance. The day followed the ACP’s established format, blending forward-looking discussion with practical, hands-on technology sessions.

The morning presentations were tailored to help younger secondary students see how aerospace connects directly to subjects they are already studying. Chris explored how automation, simulation and systems engineering are reshaping aviation and the wider STEM landscape. Ogi introduced immersive virtual reality design, demonstrating how creative digital tools are now embedded in professional engineering, modelling and prototyping workflows. Mike concluded by outlining structured pilot training pathways while also drawing attention to the critical operational roles, beyond the flight deck, that ensure aircraft operate safely and efficiently.

For many of the Year 8 and 9 students in particular, this represented an early introduction to aerospace as a realistic and accessible career field. Questions throughout the morning reflected genuine curiosity about subject choices, work experience routes and how emerging technologies may shape future opportunities.

During the afternoon breakout rotations, students engaged directly with the ACP technology suite. The FPV drone simulators offered a practical introduction to flight control and spatial awareness. The VR design station enabled students to build and explore their own virtual environments, reinforcing the overlap between creativity and technical skill. Mike led the VR Flight Experience, giving students insight into cockpit procedures and the decision-making environment pilots operate within. Spot, the quadruped robot, once again drew strong interest, prompting discussion around robotics, autonomy and AI integration.

Engagement remained consistent across all year groups, with the mixed-school format contributing to a collaborative and focused atmosphere throughout the day.

The ACP extends its thanks to Atul Karia, Deputy Head responsible for Careers, for coordinating the visit and supporting a well-organised and productive event for both schools.
