Collegiate School Students Explore Aerospace Futures with ACP
Collegiate School in Bristol hosted the ACP Roadshow on 29 April, where 112 students participated in a day focused on aerospace innovation and career opportunities. The visit provided students with insights into emerging technologies and potential pathways in aviation.
Chris Marshall opened the session by examining how Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies are transforming the aerospace landscape. His presentation featured demonstrations of drone capabilities and robotic systems, illustrating the ongoing technological developments shaping the industry.
Lee Mason followed with a comprehensive overview of blockchain and AI applications. His presentation helped students understand how these digital innovations could influence future career opportunities in engineering and technical fields.
Mike Stokes then guided the group through the process of obtaining pilot qualifications. He outlined the variety of flying opportunities available beyond commercial airline roles, including specialized technical operations that students may not have previously considered.
The presentation of Spot, Boston Dynamics’ quadruped robot, provided a practical demonstration of advanced robotics technology and its potential applications in maintenance and inspection roles. Students were able to interact with Spot and directly ask questions to receive a reply from the quadruped himself.
Following lunch, participants engaged with hands-on activities designed to complement the morning’s presentations. Students tested their skills on drone flight simulators, experienced virtual reality flight environments, and enjoyed a hands-on 3D VR design experience.
The ACP Trustees extend their thanks to Jeremy McCollough and Claire Maggs for organising the visit. We appreciate the participation of all staff members and students whose engagement contributed to a productive day.
As the Roadshow continues its journey across the UK, we remain committed to introducing young people to the possibilities within aerospace and aviation – industries that will benefit from the talents of many students we met at Collegiate School.
