The ACP Roadshow visits the North Yorkshire Coast
On 14 November the ACP Roadshow Team of Michael Smith, Chris Marshall, Mike Stokes and Gordon Emanuel, accompanied by Jack Homewood from Babcock International, were hosted by Scarborough UTC when they presented to an audience of 109 young people and staff including those from St. Augustine’s School, Lady Lumley’s School, Whitby School, Filey School and Scarborough Sixth Form.
Starting with NASA’s Artemis programme, during the morning Dr Smith went on to introduce students to some of the technologies of what is known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (see: Technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution) such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, The Internet of Things, Robotics, Drones, Virtual Reality, Quantum Computers, Nanotechnology, 3D Printing and Blockchain + Cryptocurrency. With robotics and AI he was joined by Chris Marshall who introduced and directed questions to, Spot, our Boston Dynamics quadruped robot who then handed over to Jack Homewood who introduced Babcock International and explained his recent journey as a history graduate to project manager.
Dr Smith then explained the aerospace, space and aviation industries in more depth and made particular reference to their current and future career opportunities, plus future technologies up to the year 2050. Following our introduction of a student dressed in a replica NASA Shuttle EVA suit with one of our drones flying ‘top cover’ a short break was taken for lunch and then the during the afternoon the students were encouraged to be ‘hands-on’ with drone flight simulators, VR flight experiences and Augmented Reality design plus 3D Printing.
On behalf of the ACP Trustees, Dr Smith would like to thank most warmly Mrs H Dowds, the College’s Principal and, in particular, Natalie Griffiths, Assistant Principal, and their colleagues for the excellent organisation and hosting. Also, from the ACP Trustees, warmest thanks as always to our colleagues, Chris Marshall from Airborne Platforms, Mike Stokes from DevelopMyWeb and Gordon Emanuel, a digital artist and designer. Finally, we are most grateful indeed to Babcock International who were superbly represented by Jack Homewood
The visiting schools have now joined Scarborough UTC as members of the ACP ‘family’ and will receive a continuing and growing input of relevant information via our Network, website, social media and YouTube channel. To the staff of all five schools and the UTC we say a very sincere Thank You, and to the students we wish them every success for their future education and subsequent careers. We look forward to presenting again at Scarborough UTC in academic year 2027/28.
